Wear It Like Your Hero

When you hear the word superhero, you might think of capes, masks and hidden powers! However, this National Superhero Day, we’re moving away from fiction and comic books and diving into the real world…

Here at Yumi, we’re advocates of appreciating real women, their stories and how they choose to express themselves. After all, standing out from the crowd is the way forward! So, on the 28th of April, we’re celebrating the unsung saints…who don’t necessarily wear capes. As part of our campaign, we’ve selected four women who make a difference to ordinary lives and put others before themselves every day at work. We’ve honoured their efforts by letting them choose a dress from our range that they can wear to the office, and that makes them feel like they can take on the world!

So, without further ado…here’s the heroes we’ve chosen!

Laura, Teacher

Meet Laura! An early riser and a fan of swimming, she works for over 12 hours a day (plus lesson prep). We reckon the children that Laura teaches will think she looks great!

What’s the most rewarding thing you experience at work?

Where I work the children start at lower than average levels – many children do not start speaking English (or very little). While it does make your job harder, it’s very rewarding seeing how far these kids have come. They leave our school at, or above, average national standards, which means we help them make massive leaps, and it’s exciting to see what they’re capable of when sometimes they didn’t know what they could achieve themselves!

What would your advice be for people to become an everyday superhero like you?

Patience. You must have so much patience as a teacher and understanding of so many factors in these children’s lives, not all of them very nice. However, it is certainly harder to adopt the same mentality for adults, but everyone has all these unseen factors going on in their live – so try to bear this in mind when relationships at work, or elsewhere, get strained.

Here at Yumi, we love expressing personality in our designs. How does the outfit you’ve chosen make you feel?

The dress I’ve chosen is a fabulous way to start spring. It makes me feel confident and relaxed, while feeling totally put together and ready to face the world. I’ll be wearing it all spring! And it could double up as a great wedding outfit this summer – job done!

Emma, Scientist

With great power comes great responsibility; Emma works day-to-day supporting the conduction of clinical trials to treat patients and developing new treatments. We’re confused (but fascinated) already!

If you/your job had a superhero name, what would it be and why?

The Discoverers.

Could you tell us a little bit about your daily routine?

No day is the same in my job. Each clinical trial is a large team effort across the globe, with multiple disciplines working on different aspects of the trial to ensure that results of it are accurate, well-documented, reliable and trustworthy.

Can you tell us about your outfit and how it makes you feel?

The outfit I have chosen is bright and summery. It makes me feel energetic, positive and ready to get outdoors and have fun with family and friends.

Sarah, Doctor

Floral Tunic Dress

Say hello to Sarah, a hard-working doctor who spends most of her days dressed in smart clothes or scrubs on 13-hour shifts! She’s kindly taken time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions for us.

What’s the most rewarding thing you have experience at work?

The most rewarding experiences at work are when you realise you are truly making a difference to someone’s life and their family. Seeing people get better and knowing that you have helped with that is just the best feeling in the world. I remember a particular patient who was extremely poorly and came very close to dying. With a lot of medical interventions and great nursing care, a few weeks later he was up and walking about. He gave everyone in the team a big hug before he got discharged and I think nearly everyone shed a tear of happiness! As doctors, we can’t always fix every problem, but real human connection is something we get to experience every day and that’s a real privilege.

If you/your job had a superhero name, what would it be and why?

The Marvellous Multitasker – I think anyone who works in the NHS should have this title!

We’d love to know how the outfit you’ve chosen makes you feel.

Wearing this beautiful coral dress makes me feel so feminine. The colour is just gorgeous and so summery – it puts a huge smile on my face!

Nia, Nurse

Oriental Flower Dress

As a clinical nurse specialist in breast, Nia’s very close and supportive of her patients. From Monday to Friday she usually wears her uniform but look how great she looks in this bright dress!

What’s your advice for people to be considered a hero like you?

I really don’t see myself as a superhero – just someone doing a job they love. But, if I could advice anything it would be treat everyone how you would like to be treated.

What’s the most rewarding thing that’s ever happened at work?

The patients – they are the focus for everything I do. Making a horrible situation just a little better is my motivation. Currently, we have inadequate facility and are in the process of fundraising for a new breast care unit, which will make such a different to our patients.

We’d love to know how the outfit you’ve chosen makes you feel.

I don’t normally wear a dress – at work it’s a tunic and trousers, and at home it’s comfortable clothing unless I am going out. The dress made me feel special; it was very comfortable to wear and fitted very nicely. The dress will be wonderful to wear on holiday, going out in the evening or for a special occasion: a very versatile dress.
